MississaugaGives – Happening Today!
by Lauren Walsh, Vice Chair
Attention Mississauga residents: GivingTuesday has arrived in the city.
Now that you’ve kicked off your holiday shopping with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s time to begin the season of giving with the newest phenomenon and social movement – GivingTuesday. Today, Tuesday, December 1st, 2015, marks the 4th annual GivingTuesday celebration across the globe. Read more to find out how you can participate in our local adaptation, MississaugaGives!
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday originally started in the USA in 2012 by the combined efforts of the UN Foundation and NYC 92Y. Soon after, the global movement was introduced to Canada through CanadaHelps and The GIV3 Foundation. GivingTuesday is a day designated to all forms of giving, when people can come together and celebrate generosity.
What is MississaugaGives?
MississaugaGives is the local adaptation of GivingTuesday. It all started when MG Chair, Nicole Danesi, stumbled upon GuelphGives last December. With all the success of the City of Guelph in mind, Danesi was determined to bring the movement to her ‘hometown,’ Mississauga, and began putting a team together in early 2015.
MississaugaGives is a group of young, enthusiastic philanthropists who have decided to use their skills and talents to spread awareness of the great charitable work going on in the city. With the support of City Council, as well as by partnering with 35 charities, the MG team has encouraged Mississaugans to get involved in the movement by volunteering, donating or fundraising to a cause they care about.
How does MississaugaGives work?
The MississaugaGives website does not collect electronic donations, but we will point you in the right direction. Only donations made to our charity partners today (Tuesday, December 1st, 2015) will be counted towards the MississaugaGives goals. It’s as easy as 5 simple steps!
Visit our website today to make a financial donation to one of our partnered charities:
1. Go to our homepage and scroll down to “Find Your Cause”
2. Select a cause (Environment, Health, etc.)
3. Select a charity partner from the list to learn more
4. Click the red "DONATE" button under the description
5. You will be led directly to the charity's donation page
Don’t want to donate cash but still want to be involved?
In addition to money, you can donate hair, clothing and food to many of our partners. You can do so by going to our website and following the instructions listed above, or by going to one of the designated areas for donation collection. To see where events and collections are happening, click here.
It’s beneficial, it’s exciting, it’s selfless and it’s happening in the City of Mississauga! Remember, there’s always time to Do Good. Feel Good.
