7 ways to overcome writer's block
Writing, any type of writing, can flow like a river over rocks or it can be stopped by the dam known as writer's block. Here are seven ways to get over it!
1. Listen to music. I can’t even count how many times listening to my favourite music has managed to push me through my writer’s block. Listening to music lets you turn off everything else, and just feel, which in my books, is essential to writing the perfect piece.
2. Second on my list is jotting out ideas in point forms, fractions of sentences, or even just key words I feel will influence my writing. Sometimes our brains work faster than our hands can write, so jotting down key ideas is definitely one of the best ways to make sure your whole idea gets out, with all the important details.
3. Take a break and walk away. Sometimes the best way to get over your writer’s block is to just turn your back. Stop it altogether and take a break from the pressure you put on yourself to create the perfect piece and just stop.
4. Research. Go see what’s out there! If you’re writing a thesis or a fictional book, it never hurts to see and read what others have done. This can help you gain ideas and expand your imagination. Ask for different opinions; having other’s critique your work is never a bad thing. Everyone thinks differently and this opens the doors to new points of view.
5. Start from the end. Start writing a conclusion and give yourself a deadline. Doing this will turn you into the classic college student trying to submit your portion of the essay on time without letting your team members now that you did this two hours before the deadline. Let’s be real; this will probably be your best work but you’re no longer thinking about what it sounds like and now your more focused on what makes sense.
6. Exercise. Take a simple step back. Writers get writer’s block when they start overthinking everything. When you’ve been staring at your screen for longer than 30 minutes, get up and take a breather. There is no need to stress yourself out over one of your own creations. Don’t let it torment you! If you feel like you’re getting down and out about your writing allow yourself to breath. Take a break and let those creative juices come back!
7. Here’s a bonus seventh point for you:.! Talk to you co-worker, your friend, work on your ideas with someone else, collaborate. It does wonders for creativity, it helps you to see it from a different perspective, and definitely points you in the right direction-a direction you might not even have found without the help. Collaborating with someone who’s trying to get the same point across is one of the best ways to get over your own block, mainly because sometimes they’re able to better communicate something you’ve been stuck on for ages.
