Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - Who decides where these digital speed radars go and how long they're there for?
Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask The City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question comes from a reader who was curious about the digital speed signs in their neighbourhood.
Who decides where these digital speed radars go and how long they're there for?
City of Mississauga staff determine the location of these units, known as speed awareness devices and the length of time they are at a location. In fact, many locations are chosen based on requests from the public.
These devices are part of the City’s Speed Awareness Programs. The radar measures the speed of an approaching vehicles and the electronic board displays the vehicle speed. These signs are intended to raise awareness to both the motorist and community of vehicle operating speeds on residential roadways.
The City has a variety of speed awareness devices and utilizes other passive traffic calming techniques to address speeding. These techniques include pavement markings and a variety of programs such as ‘Road Watch’ , ‘Neighbourhood Speed Watch’ and the ‘Please Slow Down’ lawn sign program. The City also has a Traffic Calming Policy for the implementation of physical traffic calming such as speed humps.
If you are concerned about vehicle speeds on your street or know of a street that would benefit from traffic calming, please call 3-1-1 (or 905-615-4311 outside of city limits) to request an evaluation.
If you’ve got a question about the City, we want to hear from you.
