Today’s question is about speed limits on City of Mississauga roads.  

How are speed limits set on Mississauga roads?

The Province of Ontario, through the Highway Traffic Act (H.T.A) gives cities the power to set speed limits. For most cities like Mississauga, the default speed limit is 50 km/h.

When a municipality sets a speed limit other than 50 km/h, it must first get Council approval through a by-law and then install the appropriate signage on the roadway.  

When setting speed limits on major roads, the City takes in a number of factors such as vehicle operating speeds, adjacent development, collision history, pedestrian and cyclist activity, driveway spacing and the location of signalized intersections.

It is City policy to set 40 km/h speed limits for roads in front of elementary schools and for roadways whose geometric design cannot support a 50 km/h or higher limit.
On major roads where elementary schools are present, a 40 km/h when flashing speed limit may be considered.
