Join the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra for a thrilling start to their 2018/19 concert
season! On October 13, the MSO performs Má Vlast, a staple of Czech symphonic repertoire, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. This concert features Bedřich Smetana’s most well- known work in its entirety in which he highlights the many facets and regions of the former country. Guest conductor, Misha Roháč, will be travelling from his home in Prague to join the MSO for this not-to-miss performance.

Má Vlast (My Homeland) is made up of six tone poems all relating to Smetana's beloved Bohemia. The composer was struck deaf early in 1874, just before beginning the first piece in the set, and composed the entire work unable to hear a single note of it. Although its individual components are sometimes performed and recorded separately, most commonly the second in the set, The Moldau, the composer intended them as a single entity, to be performed like a suite or symphony.

Guest conductor, Misha Roháč, studied conducting at the University of Toronto between 1993 and 2001 under Raffi Armenian. It was during this time that he began his long relationship with the Mississauga Symphony, first as a member of the trumpet section and later as Apprentice Conductor under John Barnum (1997-2001). Upon completing his studies, he relocated to the Czech Republic, where his early tenures included positions with the Janáček Opera in Brno and the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc. In 2004 he became the Music Director of the West-Bohemian Symphony Orchestra in Mariánské Lázně, a position he held for 7 seasons. During his time there, he conducted over 200 Symphonic concerts and 300 outdoor promenade concerts. Since 2011, Misha has been guest conducting in the Czech Republic and Germany with prestigious ensembles such as the Prague Philharmonia, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra Prague, the Thüringer Symphoniker in Germany and the Slovak Radio Symphony in Bratislava, with whom he recorded a CD of modern works for NAXOS in May of 2018.
