Today’s question is about how to foster a pet. 

I am interested in fostering a pet for a short period of time. How can I do that?

Mississauga Animal Services offers foster care opportunities in the spring and summer months for people who would like to learn and care for a pet without the obligation of a long-term commitment. The foster care program provides temporary care to pets that need special attention and care outside of the shelter environment. Most of these pets are cats and kittens that are either pregnant, nursing or are orphaned. Fostering allows a pet to become more adoptable and gives them another chance to find a happy home.

Mississauga Animal Services provides food and pet supplies for the pet during the time they are in a foster home. To become a foster parent, you would need to complete an application form and submit it at the Animal Services shelter located at 735 Central Parkway West, Mississauga. 

After they receive your application, staff will conduct a home inspection to ensure that the required standards for fostering are met and provide potential foster parents with guidelines for foster care. Once this step is complete, the applicant's name will be added to the foster parent waitlist. Animal Services will contact approved applicants when they have animals that require foster care.
