Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - Why did the snow plow come to my street and leave without clearing snow?
Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about why the snow plow left my street without plowing it.
Why did the snow plow come to my street and leave without clearing snow?
The most common reason why a snow plow has to turn back from a street is due to parked cars on the road. Parked cars can prevent snow clearing equipment from passing through safely. Residents are asked to remove all parked cars from their street prior to and during a snowfall.
The City of Mississauga has an on-street parking restriction in effect year-round between 2 and 6 a.m. Parked or stopped vehicles in contravention of the City’s Traffic By-law or on-street parking restriction may be issued a penalty notice and may be subject to towing and storage fees at the expense of the owner.
The City clears and salts roads using a priority route system. Major roads, such as Burnhamthorpe Road or Dundas Street are cleared first so that transit and emergency vehicles can travel safely during and after a storm. Winter maintenance on residential roads, priority sidewalks, bus stops and pedestrian crossings starts once major roads are cleared.
In a snow storm with 8 to 15 centimetres of accumulation, you can expect major roads to be cleared within 12 hours after the snow has stopped. Residential roads, priority sidewalks, bus stops and pedestrian crossings would be cleared within 24 hours of the snow ending.
