I want to install a pool in my backyard this summer, do I need to get a building permit?

You don’t need a building permit to install an above-ground or in-ground swimming pool, hot tub or swim spa in your backyard.

However, you do need to follow the swimming pool installation procedure which will require you to submit documents and pay fees to the City before you install the swimming pool, hot tub or swim spa.

Your pool must be set back at least 1.5 meters from all lot lines, measured from the inside wall of the pool. If you're installing a hot tub, swim spa or your property is next to a greenbelt zone, you may need to meet different requirements. Those requirements can be found in the Zoning by-law.
