Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - Why are some street lights on all day?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about street lights.

Why are some street lights on all day?

The LED street lights in Mississauga are controlled by a wireless network so that they can communicate with each other and to central controllers. The lights are programmed to turn “on” and “off” based on sunset and sunrise times.

If the LED lights lose communications to central controllers, they are programmed to turn themselves “on” and remain “on.” This is due to safety reasons to ensure that roads remain lit at night.

As some groups of LED street lights stay “on” all day, the City is investigating the cause of these non-communicating lights to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.
