The history of Mississauga's Ritchie Crescent
Modern Mississauga and Heritage Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Way Back Wednesday.”
We’ll share information about the history of Mississauga here and answer your questions.
Today’s topic is the history of Ritchie Crescent.
South of Lakeshore Road, near where the Cooksville Creek (also known as Saul’s Creek) meets Lake Ontario, and crossed by the Waterfront Trail, is a small residential street called Ritchie Crescent. The Ritchie family immigrated from Ireland in 1859, led by patriarch Richard Ritchie. Richard’s son, John Ritchie, farmed here in the Lakeview area, owning land both north and south of Lakeshore Road – part of their property is bisected today by Beechwood Avenue. The Ritchie farmhouse, which stood on the north side of Lakeshore Road, had been built around 1885, and stood until the 1950s. The small crescent along the Lake Ontario shoreline at the end of Beechwood Avenue remembers the Ritchie family and their roots in historic Lakeview.
