 Today’s question is about reporting excessive noise in Mississauga.

My neighbour regularly mows their lawn before 7 a.m. Can I file a noise complaint with the City?

The City of Mississauga’s Noise Control By-Law and Nuisance Type Noise By-Law state that no one can cause or create noise to disturb Mississauga residents, unless an exemption has been provided.

According to the City’s Noise Control By-Law, you’re permitted to operate power tools for domestic purposes, including lawn mowers and grass trimmers, from Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday and Statutory Holidays from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

If you hear excessive noise outside of the permitted hours, you can file a noise complaint. Here’s how:

·         Call 311 or 905-615-4311 (outside city limits), Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

·         Submit a service request online 24/7

For excessive noise caused by parties, domestic disputes or yelling, contact the police while the noise is occurring. 

Noise violations are managed by the City’s Compliance and Licensing Enforcement staff, with By-Law Enforcement handling any residential noise complaints within Mississauga.

Once reported, the person(s) responsible for the noise are issued a letter notification indicating a noise complaint has been registered with the City indicating a possible violation of the type of noise. If you reported the noise, you will receive a letter and a package with a noise log sheet to record the time, date and type of noise for 3 to 4 weeks. The log will act as evidence if you decide to take legal action.

The City of Mississauga currently offers a mediation service and strongly recommends it as a tool to help solve noise issues.
