Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - What is the process to foster a pet in Mississauga?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about how to foster a pet in Mississauga

What is the process to foster a pet in Mississauga?

Mississauga Animal Services is looking for dedicated volunteers to help foster pets. Volunteers must be age 18 or older and residents of Mississauga. The City’s foster care program provides temporary care to pets that require special attention and care outside of the shelter environment. Fostering makes a pet more adoptable and gives them a chance to find a happy home.
Foster care is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to learn and care for a pet without the obligation of a long-term commitment.

Animal Services is looking for foster homes for:

  • Nursing or expecting mothers

  • Pets recovering from surgery

  • Pets with behavioural issues

  • Orphaned pets

Interested in becoming a foster parent? Please download and complete the application form and submit it in person at the Animal Services shelter.

Eligible applicants will receive a home inspection conducted by Animal Services to ensure the environment meets required standards for fostering. Once this step is complete, they will be added to the foster parent wait list. Approved applicants will be contacted once the shelter receives a pet that requires foster care.

Applicants should also be aware that if they have pets at home, they should be kept separate from the foster pets. The shelter will also provide all necessary supplies, such as food.
