Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - My neighbour keeps blowing grass clippings and fallen leaves onto our street. Can I file a complaint?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about maintaining your property.

My neighbour keeps blowing grass clippings and fallen leaves onto our street. Can I file a complaint?

There is no requirement in the City’s by-laws for a home owner to pick up or dispose of grass clippings or fallen leaves. In order to determine if a violation has taken place, we encourage you to enter a complaint by contacting 3-1-1 (905-615-4311 outside City limits).

If you are a property or land owner, it’s important to know how to prepare and maintain your property according to the City’s by-laws

As the cooler months are upon us, here are a few common property standards that everyone should follow:

·         Leaf clearing: rake and bag your leaves in the appropriate yard waste bags for leaf pick-up during waste collection. The Region of Peel will be collecting yard waste until mid-December. Keep catchbasins clear of leaves to avoid blockages and reduce flood risk.

·         Waste containers must be stored in the backyard, side yard or garage when they’re not out for pickup. If someone has been dumping garbage or debris you can report litter or dumping to 3-1-1.

·         Litter, debris and pests: buildings must be kept free of debris at all times to prevent health hazards and pest infestations such as insects, rodents or vermin. Keep all catchbasins near or in your driveway and backyard clear of ice, snow or any litter or debris to ensure that water flows safely away from your property. You can report blocked street catchbasins to 3-1-1.
