History

The founder of Alexanian was Aris Alexanian. He lived in Hamilton, Ontario and he was a teacher for orphaned Armenian children in Georgetown. With the support of friends and associates, he opened his first store. The store was located on King Street in Hamilton and their specialty was imported hand-knotted Oriental rugs from all around the globe. He soon decided to do his own carpet purchases and this began his world-travels. To supply his business, he traveled extensively to the Middle-East and India. These travels made him great connections which would help him build his flooring empire.

Educating the people

At this point and time in history, few people traveled to these countries. They were a great mystery to most and it seemed everyone wanted to know about these foreign lands. Alexanian began carrying a 16 mm movie camera with him and recording movies along the way in his travels. When he would return home, he would speak for community groups and show his movies. His travels taught many people about places they never dreamed of. By 1958 Alexanian had traveled more than 304,000 miles out of the country after WWII.

The Alexanian Mantra

Aris Alexanian was a firm believer in customer service. Alexanian did everything in his power to provide the best products available. He always went above and beyond what was expected of him to care for his product and his customers. This level of service was expected of every employee that worked for him. His sons grew to take over the company, and each of them demanded the same loyalty, honesty, and care as their father. Today this carpet empire is run by fourth-generation members of the Alexanian family.

Keeping up with the times

By the 1950s Aris Alexanian’s sons, Aram and Armen had joined the family business. Soon after their younger brother, Albert would join them. These young men had grown up learning the business and they were ready to take their places. During this time broadloom carpet came on the scene. Broadloom carpet is woven on a wider loom than hand-woven carpet. You probably call it wall-to-wall carpet. Aris decided to add broadloom carpet to his product line. From then on, Alexanian added new flooring choices to the product line as they became in style.

Modern-day

Ninety-five years later, family members still run the company and they exhibit the same level of service, attention to detail, and loyalty to their customers that Aris Alexanian expected and demanded.
