Modern Winter Driving: Tips for safely enjoying the season

[PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MICHELIN]

With winter fast approaching, a recent survey by Michelin Canada showed that Ontarians could be taking better precautions to prepare for winter driving.

The first step to conquering those harsh winter roads is equipping your vehicle with four winter tires. The study revealed that only 66 per cent of Ontario drivers switch to winter tires when the season rolls around, even with incentives like lower insurance premiums being offered since 2016.

Winter tires, like the Michelin® X-Ice® Snow, should be installed once the temperature approaches freezing. While your brakes stop the wheels from turning, it is the grip of the tires that brings your car to a stop.

In addition to winter tire installation, driving smoothly, staying alert and looking ahead will help Ontarians handle the winter season with ease. As a former professional racecar driver and Michelin Driving Expert, here are my top tips for staying safe on the road this winter.

Check your tires: You should check the tire pressure of all your tires (including the spare) every month! You should also examine your tires’ tread condition. If the tread seems worn down, have your tires checked by a professional.

Plan your routes in advance and check road conditions: Checking reports on road conditions will help you make driving decisions and avoid dangerous situations.

Emergency phone numbers: Identify the person/people to call in case of emergency by putting these three letters – ICE – before their name(s) in your cellphone contacts.

Check your fluids: Make sure you always have at least half a tank of gas before heading on the road, and plan stops for gas ahead of long drives. Also, carry extra windshield washer fluid to ensure proper visibility.

With the first snowstorm not too far away, the time to prepare is now. Being prepared for winter driving will help you (safely) make the most of the upcoming season.
