4 terrific audio books worth listening to

The number of us who enjoy listening to audio books has soared in the past decade. In fact, the United States alone has seen such a dramatic increase in demand that the number of audio books it published between 2010 and 2016 increased from 6,200 to a staggering 50,000! This is mainly thanks to the fact that audio books are so practical. With the advances in audio technology that mean most of us can listen to high quality sound on our phones – as well as the success of apps such as Amazon’s Audible – it’s never been easier to get lost in a good book on the go.

This rise in popularity has left us with a wide choice when it comes to audio books. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling novel, a celebrity biography, or a guide to the basic strategy at casino.com/ca, there’s a wealth of options available. This post will guide you through some of the best audio books, in a range of genres, that you should listen to.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
If you’ve got a pile of classic novels you keep meaning to read, but somehow never get around to opening, why not check them out as audiobooks? The Audible original version of ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson is a dramatization with a cast that includes Owen Theale, the actor who played Ser Allison Thorne in ‘Game of Thrones’. This brings Stevenson’s classic adventure story boldly to life – and you’ll feel more as though you’re watching a play than listening to a book!

Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders
Lincoln in the Bardo is an experimental novel which was written by George Saunders in 2017. Mainly taking place over the course of one evening, it follows President Abraham Lincoln during and after the death of his 11-year-old son. The prize-winning novel was a wild success – and the audio book was equally well-received. Featuring 166 different narrators, including actors Julianne Moore and Lena Dunham, it won the 2018 APA Audie Awards for Audio book of the Year.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

One of the most highly anticipated titles of 2018, approximately 725,000 copies were sold in Canada and the United States on its very first day of publication. Even self-proclaimed purists who prefer physical books over audiobooks are likely to be swayed by ‘Becoming’ – it’s narrated by Michelle Obama herself, giving an authentic experience with which the paperback just can’t compete.

The Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson is one of the world’s best-loved travel writers. In ‘The Body’, he turns his hand to guiding us through the workings of our own anatomy – with fascinating (and hilarious) results. The audio book is read by Bryson himself, a Des Moines native who has lived in the United Kingdom for most of his adult life. As with most of Bryson’s books, it’s perhaps safest not to listen to this one in public places – listeners have reported embarrassing fits of laughter which could attract some unwelcome attention if you’re out and about!
