Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - How Can I Prepare My Home for Possible Basement Flooding?
Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about preparation for possible basement flooding.
How Can I Prepare My Home for Possible Basement Flooding
Here are three helpful tips on how you can do this:
1) Have the right insurance
Protecting your property and belongings in the event of a flood is important. Not all insurance policies are the same. Speak to your insurance provider to make sure your home and property are covered. Check out our Top 10 Emergency Preparedness Tips: Insurance for Disasters.
2) Disconnect your roof downspouts
If your downspouts are still connected to the standpipes against your home, consider facing them towards your lawn or garden at least two metres from the house – or into a rain barrel or raingarden. Be sure that the water doesn’t flow onto adjacent properties, driveways or sidewalks.
3) Report blocked catch basins, creeks or culverts
You can report blockages to 3-1-1 (or 905-615-4311 outside city limits) or via the Pingstreet app. You can also report a catch basin or culvert problem online.
Emergencies can happen any time to anyone, so it’s important to be prepared and have an emergency kit. For more information, visit https://web.mississauga.ca/services-and-programs/fire-emergency-and-safety/how-to-prepare-for-an-emergency/
