Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - What does it mean when the City of Mississauga declares a Significant Weather Event?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about significant weather events in Mississauga.

What does it mean when the City of Mississauga declares a Significant Weather Event?

When Environment Canada issues an alert for extreme weather conditions, such as significant snowfall or icy conditions, the City may declare a Significant Weather Event in accordance with the Ontario Municipal Act (Regulation 239/02). This declaration allows crews more time to deploy winter equipment to address the storm conditions. Once the declaration has been lifted, the City’s service level timing begins.

During snow clearing, please be patient – drive according to weather conditions and give snow clearing equipment lots of space. Removing parked vehicles on residential streets will also make snow clearing easier and safer for winter crews.
