Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - What is my responsibility for snow clearing? Is there assistance? What is the City’s responsibility for clearing?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about snow clearing.

What is my responsibility for snow clearing? Is there assistance? What is the City’s responsibility for clearing?

How Can Residents Help?

Be a good neighbour and clear your sidewalk and driveway of snow and ice as soon as possible after a snowfall to allow others to travel safely. Residents can also help older adults and people with physical disabilities by offering to help clear snow and ice from their property.

Avoid parking your vehicle on residential streets when it snows. Parked vehicles prevent winter crews from salting and clearing roads for emergency vehicles, public transit and residents. Temporary parking permits may be suspended at any time during snowfall so that roads can be cleared safely.

Keep waste containers off of the road. Set them back from the street to allow enough space for the snow plows to pass.

Snow Clearing Assistance:

Although the application period is over, consider applying for the City’s driveway windrow snow clearing program next season. The program is for residents 65 years and older and for persons with disabilities.

What Does the City Clear?

Surfaces are salted if five centimetres or less of snow has fallen, and plowed and salted when more than five centimetres falls.

The City’s winter maintenance crews clear priority roads and sidewalks, on-street bike lanes, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and specific roadside trails within 12 to 24 hours of the snow stopping. Residential roads are cleared within 24 to 36 hours of the snow stopping.

It may take longer to clear roads and sidewalks if there are back-to-back storms, or when a significant weather event is declared.
