This week’s question is about LED pot lights from Daniel P.

I’m looking to change the type of lights I have in my ceilings. Are LED pot lights really worth it?

Besides being quite efficient, recessed LED lights are discreet and easier to install compared to the traditional halogen potlights. Come to think of it, I don’t think I have installed anything other than LED potlights in the last 10 years.  This product has certainly come a long way becoming much more affordable and can be found at most renovation centre's (or online). Here are a couple of things to consider when planning your installation.

1: The colour and intensity of LED lights is measured using a value on Kalvin scale, commonly 3000K – 5000K. The lower the number, the lower the intensity and visa versa. There are also descriptors such as warm, daylight or blue. The higher the number, the more intense the colour.

2: Not all LED lights are dimmable and not all dimmers are compatible with LED lights. If you want your fixtures to be dimmable, make sure your purchase the right LED lights – it should be indicated on the packaging. I have encountered this situation often and it can be very frustrating.

3. Since recessed LED lights are quite slim at roughly ½”, they can go almost anywhere you need them. Just be sure to consider building code requirements such as protection in insulated areas and “wet rated” units when installing in a bathroom.
