Bollywood Star Raftaar Brings Surprise Guests to Canada’s Largest South Asian Festival
#BollywoodMonster Mashup presented by TD Bank Group culminated 8 days of free virtual events full of surprises from India, USA and Canada @BollywoodMashup on Facebook.
Highly-anticipated fan-favourite Raftaar hit the stage full force with “Swag Mera Desi”, which won Best Urban Single at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards. Surprise guests included Deep Kalsi & Yunan, who collaborated on recently-released hit “Slay”. The final surprise was Rashmeet Kaur, known for her viral performance of “Jugni Ji” on Asia’s Singing Superstar, who joined the entire crew for “Bajre Da Sitta” and “Dhaakad”. Legendary playback singer Javed Ali delivered a soulful rendition of “Kun Faya Kun”, which won a Mirchi Music Award, and then showcased his vocal prowess on a medley of “Badan Pe Sitare”, “Nagada Nagada” and “Tum Tak”. Harshdeep Kaur delivered two concerts where she validated her title as Sufi Ki Sultana with a mesmerizing “Duma Dum Mast Kalandar” and hit songs “Zaalima” and “Dilbaro”.
Taking glam to the next level was Canada’s Drag Race winner Priyanka dancing to “Ooh La La” by Babbi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal and “U Wear It Well” by RuPaul. Giggle Queens mashed up Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys with Bollywood and Bhangra. And Frog in Hand blended contemporary dance with Kalaripayattu, which is the oldest martial art in the world, on the #BollywoodMonster Main Stage brought to you by Tourism Mississauga.
Jamaican colours were flying when #BollywoodMonster Orchestra: Raags to Riddim brought the island groove of Bob Marley’s “One Love” to Bollywood classics like “Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane”. N2 the Band’s horn section added the funk to classics such as “O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aayi” by Lata Mangeshkar. Fans got behind-the-scenes access to the artists via the #BollywoodMonster Concert Ask Me Anything brought to you by OLG.
Akash Vukoti, child prodigy from the Netflix Documentary “Spelling the Dream”, endeared fans when the 12-year old revealed a side-project where he’s creating his own language. “I named it Tivinstanian. I know it sounds a little alien-like, but I am just trying to see what I can do. It’s like a little testing idea that I have for some sort of future...world language. So everyone can speak together, ” Akash explained during the live Q&A with the audience.
The #BollywoodMonster Kidzone brought to you by Tim Hortons featured high-energy Soca dance lessons, potato-printmaking and musical games. There was lots of fun for the oldest members of the family as seniors shared their hidden artistic talents such as singing, playing guitar and painting.
Vernal Savage (volunteer, Ontario Trillium Foundation) and Rudy Cuzzetto (MPP, Mississauga - Lakeshore) spoke about support that monstrARTity - the non-profit producer of the festival - recently received from the OTF Resilient Communities Fund. “Through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, monstrARTity will now be able to rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19,” Cuzzetto said. “The Ontario Trillium Foundation funding will help vibrant communities invest in community-based initiatives in the non-profit sector.”
