Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - What’s the City of Mississauga doing to keep pedestrians safe on roads?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about pedestrian safety.

What’s the City of Mississauga doing to keep pedestrians safe on roads?

In addition to making important road infrastructure changes, the City also provides reminders and road safety information through annual campaigns like Pedestrian Safety Month. Campaigns encourage road users to change their behaviour to prevent collisions and loss of life and injury from occurring.

Road safety is a shared responsibility between all road users. To make Vision Zero a reality, we all play a role in making our communities safe for everyone. As road users, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and to stay alert. You can help keep Mississauga roads safe by following the rules of the road for all modes of transport.

When walking:

  • Follow pedestrian safety signals and be aware.

  • Where possible, make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before you proceed.

  • Always cross at the pedestrian crossing, crosswalk or intersection.

When driving:

  • Look for pedestrians, especially when turning left or right. Don’t just look in front of you. Check the entire crosswalk for pedestrian and cyclists.

  • Always make a complete stop at a stop sign. Make sure the intersection is clear of pedestrians and other vehicles before proceeding.

  • Visibility decreases when it’s dark. Be extra vigilant at night or early mornings.

When cycling:

  • Use your bell or say “Passing on your left” to let pedestrians know you are planning to pass.

  • At a cross-ride, ride through the dedicated cycling space and allow pedestrians full use of the crosswalk.

  • Check for pedestrians crossing the street before making any turns at intersections.
