In conversation with modern entrepreneur Maria Munoz, owner of Mississauga’s Planted Souls.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur and how long have you been one for?
From selling snow cones in my neighbourhood as a child, to opening my first houseplant shop, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I have always dreamed of having my own business and being able to do something that truly makes me want to go to work every day. I am happy to share that it has been a little over a year since Planted Souls has come a reality to me, and I feel so thankful for this first year as an entrepreneur.

What's been the most rewarding aspect of your entrepreneurial journey?
The most rewarding part of my journey has been watching how the community has responded to my idea. Opening a new business of course is always scary. You never really know how other people will react to your idea and if they will love it as much as you. However, being in the shop and watching everyone’s reactions when they walk in is very rewarding to me. I really enjoy seeing and hearing how coming into the shop just instantly makes peoples day better. This is exactly what I hoped to accomplish by bringing plants into others’ lives and seeing it in action is just so rewarding!

How would you describe Planted Souls in 10 words?
Fun and unique, all in a one plant shopping experience.

How have you overcome obstacles?
I am a true believer that everything happens for a reason. Although things may not always make sense, and sometimes it may feel as if everything is heading in the wrong direction, I always remind myself that things are happening this way for a reason. This has helped me overcome those frustrating obstacles that I have had very little control over.

What words of wisdom do you have for other aspiring entrepreneurs?
Do not be afraid to ask for help and for what you want. I have met so many individuals throughout my journey who have been so eager and willing to help and point me in the right direction. I really believe that if I had not had the audacity to ask certain questions to certain individuals, Planted Souls would not be a reality for me yet.
