Beloved Mississauga Pizza Joint To Close After 33 Years of Serving the Community
Amadio’s Pizza, a staple in the Mississauga community, especially Port Credit, since July 1990, is sadly serving up their last pizza on Saturday, October 28th.
In a statement to Modern Mississauga Media, owner Joe Leroux, Canadian Pizza Chef of the Year in 2016 says “For close to 34 years, our family and staff have put every ounce of energy into the business, experiencing many adventures, obstacles and great rewards.”
Amadio’s has been known for their generous and consistent community involvement, from donations to the local food bank, sponsoring community hockey teams, supporting local events and more.
The pizza’s are consistently delicious, made with care and baked in stone ovens, which has contributed to them being one of the top pizza places in Mississauga for years upon years.
Why is Amadio’s Pizza closing?
A key driver was the Metrolinx construction on the train tracks at Revus Ave, the same street Amadio’s is on. Construction started in January of this year and lasted for several months. Having this key artery inaccessible impacted Amadio’s as around 90% of their customers live north of those train tracks, making getting to Amadio’s difficult. It also impacted their delivery service, with both delivery drivers and customers having to take longer routes (Cawthra & Hurontario) that are already heavily congested.
The financial impact was that sales were down over 50% during that time, which, for a small business, is a massive number.
Add in rising food costs and the precarious economic situation we’re currently in, and Leroux was left with little choice.
”As you know, the train tracks were closed for 6 months earlier this year, which dropped our sales by over half. After almost 34. years, due to health reasons and more, we unfortunately just don’t have the energy to build the business back up. The logical thing to do is to shut down and move on after searching for a buyer with no luck. It’s a bitter sweet time, but we will treasure the memories Amadio’s Pizza have given us.
If you’d like to get one last pizza from Joe and his family, they’re open Wednesday October 25th and Thursday October 26th from 4pm to 9pm, Friday, October 27th from 11 am to 9pm and finally Saturday, October 28th from 11 am until they run out of dough.
Joe, his wife Margit and daughter Alison have done well by the community over the decades and will certainly be missed.
There’s no word on what’s next for the Leroux family but with their extensive experience and knowledge, the next opportunity and adventure can’t be that far away.
If you’d like to leave a note of thanks, chime in via their Facebook page.
Thank you, Leroux family; Amadio’s will truly be missed.
