Spring Maintenance and Clean-up Work Begins in Mississauga
Milder weather means the City’s annual spring maintenance and clean-up work can begin. Residents will see City crews busy filling potholes, performing minor repairs to roadway infrastructure, clearing litter and preparing for street sweeping.
The City’s annual spring maintenance and clean-up program includes:
Pothole and roadway damage repair on City roads, including residential streets and bike lanes
Sidewalk inspection and repair
Sod damage repair caused by snow-clearing operations
Litter cleanup on roadways, catch basins and drains
Street sweeping and hard surface flushing on curb-facing sidewalks, traffic islands, hard-surfaced boulevards, roads, curbside gutters and on-street bike lanes
The City maintains 5,700 lane kilometres of roads, 2,420 kilometres of sidewalks, 51,000 catch basins, 1,000 pedestrian crossings and other infrastructure that residents rely on like multi-use trails and cycling infrastructure. Winter weather can be particularly damaging to infrastructure, resulting in the need for a routine repair this time of year.
Potholes & Roadway Damage Repair
Potholes and cracks on roadways typically occur or become more visible in the winter. Freezing and thawing can cause water under the asphalt to expand and contract. While the majority of potholes are fixed throughout the spring, City crews repair potholes year-round when temperatures are warmer and the weather allows for it. Filling potholes regularly is more efficient, cost-effective and helps keep roads in a state of good repair.
This winter season, crews have already used 60 tonnes of asphalt cold patch to fill potholes.
How you can help:
Report potholes and damaged sidewalks, curbs and sod by calling 311 (905-615-4311 outside City limits) or submitting an online service request.
Report cracked, damaged or debris-covered catch basins by calling 311 or using the online service request.
Street Sweeping & Hard Surface Flushing
Around mid to late April, weather permitting, the City begins sweeping streets and flushing hard surfaces to clear litter and debris left behind from the winter. Street sweeping prevents pollutants from entering Mississauga’s stormwater system and local waterways.
How you can help:
Avoid raking yard waste and grass clippings onto the road. Place leaves, tree trimmings, branches and other yard waste in yard waste bags for collection by the Region of Region.
Grass clippings will not be collected from the curb. After you mow, leave the clippings on your lawn. This process, known as grasscycling, is better for your lawn and saves you time and effort.
