1. Why are you running for Mayor?
I am running for mayor for a couple reasons. One reason is that I see it as a way to get involved in my community, as well as come to a better understanding of the problems and issues facing the city. There is only so much I can learn on the outside looking in. Becoming mayor would give me access to more information, which I could then use to better educate the public.
This leads me to my second reason. I want to challenge the way the mayor has done their job in the past, updating the responsibilities to better serve a 21st century citizenship. I want to use the position as a way to engage more directly with the public, through the use of social media, for example. I want more real-time discourse on talking points like transit, bike lanes, police, etc. And we can achieve that by being more visible in communities, live streaming conversations with constituents, and sharing videos across websites and social media platforms.
2. What makes you stand out over other candidates?
I’m young; 37 years old. I have a fresh perspective, unmuddied by previous business relationships or educational dogmas. As a strong communicator, I offer new ways of seeing problems and unpacking ideas. I’m also a lively and engaging musician who loves bringing people together and being up in front of crowds.
3. What are your campaign priorities and what's your approach to tackling them?
My main priority is to empower small businesses across Mississauga. I will do this by bringing more live entertainment and art festivals to different areas of the city. Through the use of social media, I want to live stream more of what’s happening, and by bringing artists from all over Mississauaga/Canada/the world to the storefronts, we can help reenergize the cultural landscape of the city.
4. What budget item is the most important for Mississauga?
For me, budget transparency is the key factor going forward. Having the whole process more publicly visible will, I feel, bring a stronger sense of unity to the city. I believe individuals, especially the younger voter demographic, don’t feel connected to the city’s decision-making process, and have tuned out. By becoming more vocal and transparent in real time on social media, I know that the constituents will wake up to the accessibility of city hall. I want to cultivate the persona of an available and accessible mayor.
5. What are your three favorite aspects of Mississauga?
Definitely the many different minor league sports. I also love long walks through green spaces and down by the lake. I really love how multicultural the city is, too. Bringing so many cultures together in harmony is a real testament to our city’s open and accepting heart.
6. How will you actively support our local businesses if elected?
Through social media and live entertainment. By visiting stores and communities, I can meet people and share our conversations and visions around the world via social media. I can hire artists and musicians to put on events out front of storefronts, or inside stores, to attract the attention of pedestrians.
7. What does Mississauga currently excel at?
Creating and sustaining a safe, multicultural region without it devolving into pockets of sequestered ethnicities.
8. How would you communicate with residents, and what communication standards can voters expect?
I will maintain active communication with as many Mississaugians as I can. I feel like accessible, transparent, two-way communication with people and those who represent them is crucial. So my phone and email will always be active if anyone wants to reach out to me.
But on top of that, you can expect to see me out and about in Mississauga every day of my term. I want to meet and get to know everyone in the city - from kids playing in the park to small business owners to retirees. And I want to be vocal and empowering on social media. I want my constituents to feel seen and heard, and social media is a great way to document and share the wonderful people and places of Mississauga.
