Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - Do pedestrian crossovers operate the same way as crosswalks?
/Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about pedestrian crossovers.
I recently moved to Mississauga and noticed there are a lot of crossings for pedestrians in the city – do these operate the same way as crosswalks?
Pedestrian crossovers are different from crosswalks, which are usually located at an intersection with stop signs or traffic signals.
Crossovers are located on streets between intersections at roundabouts or at right-hand turn lanes with specific signs and pavement markings. Drivers are required to come to a full stop at pedestrian crossovers to allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.
How to use pedestrian crossovers
· If the crossover has lights, push the button to activate the lights
· Ensure you make eye contact with drivers before you cross and that all vehicles have stopped
· Please walk your bike across the road if you’re a cyclist
All drivers and cyclists approaching a crosswalk must:
· Stop and yield to pedestrians
· Stop at the painted white triangles
· Wait for all pedestrians to cross the road completely
· Avoid passing other stopped vehicles
