6 Interesting Facts About CBD
/Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring substance that originates from cannabis. It makes up for nearly half of the entire plant’s extract. It is fast becoming one of the most interesting compounds in the world. It is said to have many properties that set it apart from its sister substance, THC, which is responsible for producing the high associated with marijuana.
As CBD becomes more relevant in society, people are going to have questions about it. While we are yet to fully understand all the potential uses of CBD right now, the things we do know are somewhat intriguing.
Here are some interesting facts about CBD.
1. Our Bodies Produce Cannabinoids
CBD contains phytocannabinoids ie cannabinoids produced by plants. These interact with our bodies’ endocannabinoid system (ECS) to produce our own cannabinoids.
Further, the brain has CB1 and CB2 receptors that are directly responsible for interacting with cannabinoids. Consuming CBD from penguin cbd will activate these receptors and help to promote homeostasis
2. CBD Is CBD
Some people think that CBD from marijuana is different from hemp-derived CBD. However, It doesn’t matter where it’s sourced from. At the molecular level, CBD is CBD.
As noted by Franjo Grotenhermen of the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines,” The human body does not care where the molecule comes from.”
It’s similar to Vitamin D. No matter if you get it from the Sun or a salmon, it’s still the same thing: Vitamin D.
While the percentage of CBD contained in some plants will be different from others, once it has been extracted, there is little to no difference in the compounds. The only difference is in the percentage of CBD that the oil contains. Depending on what effect you want to achieve there are oils with 2.5% CBD to upwords to 40%, all of which can be found on Zamnesia.
CBD oil is used in many medicines also and it has its positive effects on animals too. Check out scoopempire.com to know more.
3. We’ve Grown Hemp For A Very Long Time
Industrialised hemp is the only plant that allows the legalized production of CBD. That said, as humans, we have been growing hemp for a very long time.
In fact, the first traces of humans growing hemp date back around 10,000 years ago - pretty much at the same time that agriculture became prevalent.
Carl Sagan actually proposed that hemp could have been the first-ever crop we cultivated, but this has yet to be proven correct.
4. Ancient Greece Prescribed Medical Cannabis
The ancient Greeks were pioneers, expanding our knowledge and understanding of many things we take for granted today. Interestingly, they too prescribed medical cannabis to those with certain conditions.
For example, famous physician, surgeon and philosopher Claudius Galen often provided his patients with cannabis remedies to relieve pain. In his own words, “Some people, pulling out the juice from it when it is not ripe, use it against ears’ pains due to an occlusion, as I believe.”
The idea comes from De Materia Medica, which historians believe to be the first text that records the use of marijuana as medicine. Volume three states:
“Kannabis; is a plant of much use in this life for the twisting of very strong ropes, it has leaves like to the Ash, of a bad scent, long stalks, empty, a round seed, which being eaten of reduces sexual activity, but being juiced when it is green is good for the pains of the ears.”
Also, with the correct prescription, it can be good for nerve pain.
5. It’s Tough To Produce CBD
CBD tends to be on the expensive side due to the costs of production.
Cannabis is illegal in many countries. This means that it can only be sourced from a select few. As such, the costs of transporting cannabis from those countries, along with getting the relevant governments’ approval, can really add up.
Then there’s the manufacturing, purification and supplementary expenses to take into consideration.
Of course, there are different brands that sell CBD, each at their own price level, but the cheaper you go, the more likely there is to be a problem with the product.
For example, inexpensive CBD is less likely to be put through rigorous safety testing and purification to ease the costs of manufacturing and getting the product to market. Some brands may even intentionally mislabel their products.
6. Animals Can Use CBD
As noted earlier on, the ECS in our bodies helps us produce our own endocannabinoids to interact with CBD. But humans aren’t the only creatures that have such systems.
It turns out that our favorite pets (dogs, cats, horses, etc) have their own ECSs to process CBD in a similar fashion to us. In actual fact, all mammals have an ECS. This is the main reason why rats are used to test cannabis and related products.
Owners are now starting to give their pets CBD in various forms like capsules or traits infused with CBD to treat a wide range of conditions.
