Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - How can I prepare my child to go back to school?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about preparing your child to go back to school.

How can I prepare my child to go back to school?

As the weather turns, so does the season to return to school – safely. Whether parents choose in-person or virtual learning options, take these Core Four actions into the school year to stay healthy.

Stay apart
We know that children love playing and being together. Help kids maintain a physical distance of 2 metres/6 feet by suggesting activities and games that naturally incorporate physical distance, like badminton, or soccer, or ask the kids to imagine their favourite cartoon characters between each other.

Mask up
Masks help to reduce the spread of COVID. Choose a mask/cloth face covering that fits securely around the head and covers the nose, mouth and chin without any gaps. Some people are exempt from wearing masks for various reasons, and it’s important to practise and role model kind, respectful and courteous behaviour towards others.

Lather up
Frequent hand washing remains key to reducing the risk of COVID-19. Did you know that you should wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds? That’s the length of most pop song choruses sung once through – make a COVID-19 hand washing playlist with your friends or family!

Get tested
If your child or anyone in your household isn’t feeling well, get tested at the nearest assessment centre and stay at home. Parents play an important role screening their children each day before entering the school – use the self-assessment online tool.
