Learn about how the City of Mississauga continues to support Truth and Reconciliation

Did you know that June is Indigenous History Month and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD)?

The City of Mississauga is actively working towards reconciliation by confronting its past and present by supporting all Indigenous Peoples.

Over the past few years, the City has implemented various enhancements to honour its commitment to building and evolving relations with Indigenous Peoples and communities in Mississauga.

As NIPD approaches, continues to honour and celebrate Canada’s Indigenous communities with the following events and activities:

You’re invited! National Indigenous Peoples Day inaugural event

On June 21, the City will host an official ceremony in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Residents, Treaty and Territory holders and visitors alike are encouraged to come out and experience this inaugural event and participate in an exciting evening of Indigenous music, art and food to celebrate this important day.

The celebration begins at 6 p.m. with a musical pre-show. The official ceremony will feature virtual remarks from Mayor Crombie and live greetings from Gimaa (Chief) Stacey Laforme, MCFN will take place on the Celebration Square main stage starting at 7 p.m. with a performance by the Manitou Mkwa Singers.

Juno nominee, Shawnee Kish, is taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. and award-winning singer/songwriter Logan Staats will headline the event with a captivating musical performance starting at 8:30 p.m. Learn more

Drop-in Moccasin Identifier Project

The community is invited to create a visual reminder to recognize and honour Indigenous Peoples through a Moccasin Identifier Stencil Kit. The Moccasin Identifier was developed by Carolyn King in partnership with Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Participants will use stencils to create temporary paintings of moccasins, worn by Indigenous Peoples, to promote awareness and understanding of the history of the land we stand on. This initiative is in partnership with Museums of Mississauga. Drop-in during scheduled times. Learn more

Truth and Reconciliation Tours

Come for a tour of Mississauga’s Bradley House and grounds and learn about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the 94 Calls to Action and the history of Indigenous peoples in Mississauga. Learn more

Every Child Matters Flag permanently flying at Civic Centre
Earlier this year, the Mississauga was the first Canadian city to raise the Every Child Matters flag.

The flag, which was created to bring awareness to the residential school experience, is permanently flying on City Centre Dr., located on the grounds of Mississauga Celebration Square. Learn more

Historical Antrex Indigenous Village Site
Council has recently adopted a motion to acquire additional parkland that has a rich Indigenous history dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Through excavations, much was found including: longhouses; sweat lodges; and more than 41,000 artifacts. The City will work toward a respectful memorial and correct interpretation of this historical, archaeological site, including engaging with Indigenous communities who have Treaty and Traditional Territory in the city.
