series called “Ask the City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about smoke alarms.
I just bought a home in Mississauga. How many smoke alarms do I need?
Based on the Ontario Fire Code, it’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. You can also install smoke alarms inside every bedroom for added protection. Be sure to install the alarms in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
For maintenance, it’s important to test your alarms once a month and change the battery once a year or when the low battery warning sounds. You should also replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
It’s your responsibility as a homeowner to install and maintain working smoke alarms – it’s the law. If you don’t, it may result in a ticket resulting in a fine or conviction.
