This week’s question is about heated bathroom floors.

I'm considering installing heated bathroom floors; what do I need to know?

Heated flooring in a bathroom is almost never a bad idea and we certainly would recommend it. There is nothing better than walking onto a pre-warmed floor in the middle of winter or stepping onto toasty warm tiles after a shower. Typically, there are 2 types of in floor heating; hydronic and electric.

Hydronic heat is created with the use of ½” polyurethane lines buried into the floor which carry hot water from a boiler. This system tends to carry a bit of a higher installation cost, but is the most energy efficient and typically used in larger areas. If you are planning a major renovation such as an addition or full gut job, it might be worth your while to consider hydronic in-floor heat as an upgrade for the entire house. While you’re at it, run the lines under your driveway and you won't ever have to shovel in the winter.

When it comes to bathrooms and kitchens, we tend to use Ditra Heat, which is a electric in floor heat system. A cable, along with a sensor, gets connected to a wall mounted thermostat. Typically we use the WIFI programmable unit, which just makes life easier. You as a homeowner can install the membrane and weave the cables, but you are required to have a licensed electrician wire the thermostat and connect it to the panel as it requires a dedicated breaker.  There are some limitations with the product such as it should not be used outdoors and under hardwood floor, laminate and other similar materials.

Prior to selecting your system, it would be recommended to do your research and consult your local professional. Then enjoy your warm feet.
