Modern Entrepreneur Profile - Mississauga's Dominique McDonald

In conversation with Mississauga entrepreneur, Dominique McDonald, owner of STYLEFINDS.

1. What does your company provide/do?

STYLEFINDS is a modest womenswear brand catering to the modern, modest woman who isn't afraid to be different and stand out in her daily fashion. We specialize in custom garments that reflect individuality while honoring modesty. Later this year, we will launch our first ready-to-wear collection, taking colorfully vibrant designs to a mass audience.

2. What inspired you to start your company?

In 2018, after becoming a Christian, I found myself in the market for modest fashion that suited my personal style and came up empty. By then, neutrals, traditional silhouettes, and one-size-fits-all aesthetics dominated the modest fashion market; none of which reflected my love for bold colors, striking prints, and statement designs. I also noticed that the market was highly segmented by religion, much of it dominated by the Muslim community. I wanted to create something different: a brand where women of any background, religious or non-religious, could find modest clothes that made them feel seen and celebrated without compromising their values. STYLEFINDS was born out of that desire, a brand that would be the intersection of boldness and modesty.

3. What's the most impactful lesson you've learned being an entrepreneur?

Resilience is key. As an entrepreneur, things won't always go according to plan, and you'll more often than not need to pivot and adjust. But all those challenges are growth opportunities. They teach you to problem solve and remind you to remember your why. The key is to keep going.

4. How do you unwind?

I find joy in things that refill my creative energy: spending quality time with friends and family, listening to music that inspires me, or sketching designs that pop into my mind. These moments let me refuel while staying connected to my creative process.

5. What is the most succinct advice you would like to give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

"You can go fast alone, or far together." Community is key. Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs who are either at the same stage as you or a little further along. Their insight and experiences will help you grow, and mentors can offer invaluable guidance in how to overcome the pitfalls of building a business.

6. What are your goals for 2025?

Our top priorities are brand awareness online and in the local Mississauga community. We're also getting ready for the successful launch of our very first ready-to-wear collection in spring 2025-a major milestone in our business.

7. How did the Mississauga Starter Company Plus program help you start or expand your business?

The Mississauga Starter Company Plus program has been instrumental in my business journey. It gave me the tools to understand what it takes to run and grow a business besides strategies to move from startup to an established brand. The funding was also critical to help STYLEFINDS reach the next stage of growth, which is not always easy for a small business just starting out. Beyond the finance, the mentorship and resources from these trusted business professionals have been beneficial in shaping my path forward.
