7 tips for setting and keeping your New Year's resolution
/No matter how you feel about resolutions, I’m sure you’re looking to start 2017 off on a positive note. To help you get started, here are a few tips I use when setting goals. Let’s make 2017 the best year ever!
Make only one resolution
Your chances of success are greater when you focus your energy on changing and improving one aspect of your life. Think about what you really want. Be very specific and make it challenging so it will motivate you but is still within your capabilities.
Take small steps
Be realistic about what you want to change. If you haven’t exercised in years, don’t plan on running a marathon immediately! Think of achievable goals, like “I will go to the gym three times a week.” Give yourself enough time and resources to accomplish your goal and you’ll set yourself up for success.
Don’t wait
Don’t wait until New Year's Eve to think about what your goal is and what you really want to accomplish. Take your time and really reflect upon what you want to achieve. I actually made my resolution to get fit weeks before the New Year arrived a few years ago, and I’m ready to tackle my new goal for 2017.
Tell everyone
Tell your friends and family about your goal. Social support helps to keep you motivated and will give you the encouragement you need to keep you on track. Join a group of like-minded people with similar goals or hire a coach who will keep you accountable.
Put it in writing
When you write down your goals, you turn your thoughts into something real. Post your goals where you can see them every day, which will form a strong impression in your mind. I post my goals on a board in the kitchen where I can see them and focus on them daily. Visualize how you’ll feel once you’ve achieved your goal, which will help you push yourself to success!
Reward yourself
Rewards are a great incentive to keep you going. Make them something small but enjoyable. Treat yourself to a new workout outfit, which will make it easier to stick to a new fitness plan. I do this all the time! If you stopped smoking, treat yourself to the movies or a pedicure. The sense that you earned the reward makes it more enjoyable and hopefully will make the new habit part of your regular routine.
Get inspired
Social media and inspirational newsletters can help you stay focused on your goals. Anything that helps give you a boost and make a positive change is worth giving a try.
Expect setbacks as you may get distracted from your goal as the New Year progresses. But don’t feel discouraged. The key is to not feel guilty and keep pushing. Here’s to your health!
