/The soul of Spanish music and dance comes to life with Capriccio Español, El Salon Mexico, Malagueña, Danse Bohème as well as traditional Spanish songs and tangos. Guest artists include: tenor Romulo Delgado, the Viva Mexico Mariachi Band, Flamenco Dancer Kiyo Asaoka, as well as Argentine Tango Duo Tarek Marroushi and Linda Smith of Rhythm & Motion Dance Studio. Romulo Delgado is a classically trained tenor and a world music multi-instrumentalist. He was a region finalist at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Opera Competition in Vienna, Austria and trained in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory Music. Romulo's versatility as a performer has enchanted audiences all over North America and Europe.
Viva Mexico Mariachi is one of a kind multicultural mariachi band based in Toronto. They blend talent, charisma and experience in their professional, energetic performances. Since 2000, Viva Mexico Mariachi has been the most prestigious mariachi band in Toronto, performing a praised style of Mexican music that has been recognized by UNESCO as an 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity'. Viva Mexico Mariachi are: Ernesto Zamora, violin; Romeo Ovando, lead vocals & vihuela; Cesar Fernandez, violin; Pedro Govea, guitarron; Cecilia Guerrero, solo singer; Rebecca Hennessy, trumpet; Sandra Salverda, trumpet; Marie Goudy, trumpet; Rebekah Wolkstein, violin; Tanya Charles, violin and Kelly Lefeave, violin.
Kiyo Asaoka took her first steps into the Flamenco dance world in 1998 as a student at Arte Flamenco Spanish Dance Company. In 2001, she became a company dancer and started performing at various dance festivals in Toronto, as well as Spanish cultural venues, restaurants and private events. Kiyo has worked with a variety of artists to choreograph and perform her own creations from traditional flamenco to Japanese-influenced flamenco. She has also started producing and directing. Since 2015, Kiyo has been the organizer of ‘Tablao Flamenco Toronto’, a non-profit organization that provides live flamenco performances. With her strong commitment and passion for puro-flamenco, she continually strives to improve, studying and taking classes under the tutelage of a number of flamenco masters in both Toronto and Spain.
Tarek Marroushi has been dancing since the age of 16 in Folklore. While studying engineering at Ryerson University in 1999, he enjoyed Folklore performances in different communities, but soon became involved with Latin dancing and trained with several teachers from Hungary, Ukraine and Russia. In 2012, he was introduced to Argentine Tango by Elizabeth Sadowska, and since then has never looked back. He has been trained by her on an intensive program for few years, and his passion has taken him all across North America and abroad to Argentina, learning with many brilliant teachers and masters. In the past few years, he has worked closely with Elizabeth as an assistant, a performer and currently a teacher at the studio.
Linda Smith has been dancing Argentine Tango since 2006. She trained in Toronto and Buenos Aires with a long list of brilliant teachers, and has worked closely as an assistant and performer with Elizabeth Sadowska since 2011. She teaches the popular technique class (Tango Drills) once a month, where students come to upgrade the fundamental aspects of their dance. Her class Tango Essentials – a three-hour Intensive workshop covering a variety of topics including the giro, vals, milonga and caminata – is offered once a month. She also gives private lessons where she specializes in refining each student’s technique, connection and musicality.
