Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - If my dog and cat are both microchipped, do I have to get them a pet licence every year?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.”

We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about pet licences.

If my dog and cat are both microchipped, do I have to get them a pet licence every year?

Even if your dog and cat are microchipped, every dog and cat in Mississauga needs to be licensed as per the Animal Care and Control By-law.  A pet licence is your pet’s identification and must be visible on the collar. It contains information about your pet that helps Mississauga Animal Services return your pet if it goes missing.

As a pet owner, you are responsible for buying and renewing it every one or two years on the anniversary of the purchase, depending on your licence. If your pet is unlicensed, as an owner, you may have to pay an administrative penalty of $100.

Purchasing a pet licence helps the Animal Services shelter support the care and feeding of homeless pets, rescue sick or injured animals, and hold community education programs.

You can purchase a one or two-year pet licence online, by phone, mail or in person at our Animal Services shelter or your local community centre.
