4 winter holiday travel tips
/Are you going to spend this Christmas with your family or are you going to Europe for New Year’s Eve? Traveling during the holidays can easily turn into a living nightmare. Packing for holiday travel is often overwhelming since there are so many things and only a few bags, and there is always that fear that you will forget your wallet, passport or keys. After all, we all know that scene from Home Alone where the whole family is running through the airport. Heck, we have all lived that scene. Well, in order not to lose Kevin, or your nerves, you need to be prepared for everything that could go wrong and avoid unnecessary stress. Maybe this sounds impossible, but the following strategies could help you to actually enjoy traveling this holiday season.
Make your flight as comfy as possible
We all know how traveling by plane can be uncomfortable. There is no legroom, the seats are too narrow, it can get chilly and if that is not enough to make you miss your bed and regret the decision of ever getting out of it, there is always a crying baby, a rude passenger or unpleasant turbulence. A lot of airlines are even taking away the free blankets so you need to rely solely on yourself if you want to be comfortable. Make sure you pack a pashmina or a travel blanket in case you get chilly and do not forget your earplugs or your noise-canceling headphones. In case you are one of those lucky travelers who can sleep on a plane, make sure you pack an eye mask so you can easily doze off.
Avoid the crowds
Most people travel on a Sunday or the day before the big holiday, and those are definitely the days when you should stay at home. If there is a slightest chance to travel several days before a holiday, or rest on Sunday and wait until Monday to fly, do it. Not only will your tickets will be cheaper, but you will avoid a circus at the airport and have a more pleasant experience.
Check the weather forecast
It is amazing how most people who live in the northern hemisphere often get surprised by snow in December. If you are traveling somewhere for Christmas this year, make sure you check the forecast for the entire country before you go. In case there is a storm coming, don’t forget to check the status of your flight before you head out the door. This might help you avoid spending the night at the airport.
Don’t play Santa
You are not Santa Claus and you don’t have a magical bag where you can easily store thousands of gifts. Instead, you have your luggage with a limited amount of space, so use it wisely. You can ship your gifts ahead of time, or, if you want to deliver them yourself, consider getting gift cards. Keep in mind that your bag will probably get thrown around, so don’t place anything fragile in it. Since the security at the airport will probably open the presents if needed, don’t bother wrapping them up before you arrive.
Traveling during the winter holiday season doesn’t have to be a traumatic experience. With these simple tips you will be able to have an enjoyable journey and come back home full of positive memories.
