Why You Should Take Your Parents to See ‘A Brimful of Asha’ at Mississauga's Living Arts Centre

From January 9 – 12, 2020, Why Not Theatre brings its critically acclaimed theatre piece, ‘A Brimful of Asha’, to the Living Arts Centre for a final run before the tour takes a break.

Starring real-life mother and son, Asha and Ravi Jain, ‘A Brimful of Asha’ combines “abundant humour and unvarnished truth to life” (Stage Door News). Asha and Ravi share the stage to tell a true (and very Canadian) story about generational and cultural clash.

Asha, the subject of an arranged marriage herself, was born in India and raised in a strict traditional household, while Ravi was born and raised in Canada. Asha thinks the family should have a hand in the marriage. Ravi thinks his love life is none of his parent’s business! Coming from two entirely different points of view, their equally strong personalities make for some hilarious banter on stage.

Asha and Ravi’s mother-and-son exchanges really hit the nail on the head, making the performance hilariously relatable for Indo-Canadian audiences. At the same time, non-Indo-Canadians get a well-balanced, heartwarming glimpse of another culture – and, let’s face it, everyone’s parents think they know best!

The Globe and Mail gave ‘A Brimful of Asha’ 3.5/4 stars, describing it as “a warm, fresh piece of theatre” and Spotlight Magazine calls it “intimate, authentic, and hilarious.” If you aren’t already convinced, here’s a BONUS: everyone in the audience gets a samosa! Bring your parents along – you just might both learn a little something about each other.
