When I first heard about myofascial therapy, I had no idea what it was. In the past, I went to chiropractors, osteotherapists, and physiotherapists to help with my lower back and neck pain. All were helpful in some way but at times were difficult to book my appointment or the service dwindled over time. I wanted to invest my money where I could get predictable outcomes and relieve myself of back and neck pain from a snowboard injury and pregnancy.

Before I get into my experience, what is myofascial therapy and how does it differ from other therapies? The therapist will do fascial release technique (not to be confused with trigger point therapy) and only work on specific areas of your body during the entire session, so your muscles aren’t just getting kneaded and it’s not a full-body massage. I was unaware of the fact that there are different types of myofascial therapy, the most “trendy” being scraping technique, gua sha. Streetsville’s Myofascial Release Mississauga uses a technique trademarked by John Barnes, which involves a hands-on technique using a combination of gentle pressure and timing.

My first appointment started with an assessment by Justin Krull, founder and head physiotherapists at Myofascial Release Mississauga. We had an in-depth conversation about my symptoms, he assessed my posture, my stride and how I hold myself (gravity, range of motion, function and strength) to determine the underlying imbalances are that are reacting to those symptoms. Then we got started into some treatment and self-care exercises.

I was extremely impressed by Justin’s knowledge and ability to pick up on imbalances in my body where I was holding more tension. He was very respectful and explanatory so I knew what to expect. I would experience great relief during the session and a bit of soreness the next day. Mind you, the soreness was not unwelcome as it signified relief of tension and pain. I was able to incorporate the self-care exercises into my daily routine as they require little to no equipment. They have an online booking system, which is very easy to use to re-book or schedule my appointments.
