Mississauga Author Brings Diversity to Children's Literature
/Valene Campbell, author of ‘The Amazing Zoe’ series, announced that the third book will be released in March. Like its predecessors, it will be released under Zou Zou Media House Inc., a self-publishing company that offers step-by-step support for first-time authors. Zou Zou Media House Inc. is scheduled to officially launch on February 15th. Campbell’s newest addition to the series will tackle an important topic that is often confusing and difficult to have with children. In book 3, we will follow Zoe as she visits with her beloved grandmother. With a few brief exchanges, Zoe notices her grandmother isn’t quite herself. She is confused and forgetful, leaving Zoe to question why grandma is acting ‘strangely?’ Zoe’s mom probes about her observations, then shares grandma has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Campbell shares, “this story hits close to home. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease a few years ago and I have observed the most drastic changes over the past year. Campbell continued “I felt it necessary to capture as much of her true self to share with my 18-month old daughter, considering their current bond. As prevalent as this disease is in most communities, the perspective of the Black voice is underrepresented on this topic for young readers.” ‘The Amazing Zoe’ is crafted to serve as a tool and starting point to conversations for parents to utilize when educating their children about difficult topics. The series is for children ages 3-9 years.
The first two novels in the ‘The Amazing Zoe’ series were released in 2020; Book One
…Germy Germlins addressed the importance of personal hygiene, health & safety regarding COVID-19, while Book Two, ...A Queen Like Me, confronted racial stereotypes and biases, while focusing on the discrimination that Black girls face at a young age. Both books were widely well received by parents and children alike, spending time as best sellers on Amazon.
New readers of ‘The Amazing Zoe’ can look forward to enjoying some of the series’ features, including:
A clever protagonist who sets out to solve problems and embarks on a path of self-discovery.
An emphasis on diversity that is rarely seen yet much needed in children’s literature.

‘The Amazing Zoe’ can be purchased in Kindle eBook, paperback or hardcopy versions.
