Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - I have no AC, where can I cool off during a heat wave?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about heat waves.

I have no AC, where can I cool off during a heat wave?

When temperatures hit 32°C or more, for three or more days, it’s considered a heat wave or conditions of extreme heat. Poor air quality can cause additional health concerns when extreme heat combines with air pollutants from industry, gas-powered vehicles, and other sources. The Region of Peel’s Medical Officer of Health issues heat warnings and extended heat warnings for the Region upon notification from Environment Canada and Climate Change Canada’s data.

When there are extremely hot temperatures forecasted, the City offers residents places to stay cool. This includes visiting one of our swimming pools, spray pads or one of our air-conditioned libraries. As a reminder, due to current provincial COVID-19 restrictions, libraries are open with capacity limits.

How to prepare for a heatwave

  • Install window air conditioners and insulate if needed

  • Check air conditioning ducts for proper insulation

  • Install temporary reflectors (aluminium cardboard) to reflect heat back outside

  • Weather-strip doors and windows to keep cool air inside

  • Cover large windows that are in direct sunlight with drapes or shades

  • Stay indoors if you can

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty

  • Dress in loose, light-coloured, lightweight clothing and cover as much skin as possible
