Today’s question is about road safety and speeding

My child is back to school. What’s the City doing to slow down speeding in my neighbourhood and school zones?

Speed is a contributing factor in approximately one third of all fatal collisions. To make roads safer for all travellers and to advance Vision Zero, the City is lowering speeds limits in neighbourhoods, using Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) and installing traffic calming measures such as speed humps or raised pedestrian crossings.

Neighbourhood speed limits

Instead of reducing speed limits street by street, neighbourhood area speed limits establish a reduced speed limit for an entire neighbourhood.
Neighbourhood speed limits are being lowered from 50 km/h to 40 km/h across the city.
New signs are installed at the entrances and exits to all neighbourhoods which indicate when the neighbourhood area speed limits are in effect.

Neighbourhood School Zones and Community Safety Zones

Neighbourhood School Zones are being lowered from 40 km/h to 30 km/h.
Community Safety Zones are being established in all school zones where fines may be doubled.
New signs are installed which indicate when the new School Zone speed limits are in effect.

Automated Speed Enforcement

Automated speed enforcement uses a camera and speed measurement device to enforce the speed limit. When a vehicle is detected travelling above the posted speed limit, a ticket is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Mississauga’s two ASE cameras are currently rotating through school area Community Safety Zones where speeding has proven to be a consistent problem.
Over the coming months, twenty additional ASE cameras will be installed across the city. Signage will be posted in each location to ensure motorists are aware that cameras are operating in the area.
