Modern Travel - Adventure & Fun in Peterborough & the Kawarthas

If you’re looking for a day, weekend of multi-day trip a mere 90 minutes outside of Mississauga, Peterborough and the Kawarthas is an excellent destination.
With plenty to see, do and experience, it’s you ideal spot to have fun and adventure.

What’s there to do in Peterborough & the Kawarthas?

Canadian Canoe Museum

Majestically reopened this May at what many feel is the perfect location beside Little Lake, the Canadian Canoe Museum is a piece of living history. Swimming in rich Canadian heritage, it housers over 700 canoes, each proudly sharing a story.
Both private and public collections include canoes from hundreds of years ago, ones that have travelled thousands of kilometres, famous Canadian canoes including ones from Farley Mowat, Gordon Lightfoot, Pierre Trudeau and others.
There are canoes on the ground, in the air and on the ceilings - make sure you look around as you explore the area.
Smartly, they’re actively trilingual, with signs in English, French and Anishinabemowin, to acknowledge, understand and show ongoing respect to the Indigenous People.
With interactive exhibits, films and a wealth of available knowledge, this is a pillar of Peterborough and Canada, for that matter.
Step outside and stroll the boardwalk to the water and you can rent canoes and kayaks and depart for Voyageur tours.
Smartly, there’s an adaptive canoe and kayak launch station installed.
In the front, you’ll see a Gathering Circle, access to the Trans Canada Trail and the lobby boasts the popular Silver Bean Cafe.
Even if you’re not a canoe enthusiast, it’s worth visiting to learn about important pieces of Canada’s diverse history.

Lovesick Kayaking

With a nifty network of lakes and rivers Peterborough and the Kawarthas is a perfect place for paddlers of all skill levels and experience
The best way to spend time on the water with a guide is through Lovesick Kayaking, owned by local resident, who’s highly experienced, knowledgeable and friendly, Alex Grant.
Named after one of the 44 locks along the Trent-Severn Waterway, Alex offers a variety of tours, including the full-day one I went on. From travelling through two locks, seeing the Burleigh Falls and so much more, my 12 kilometre paddling day was perfect.
He also offers lessons and is adaptive to any level of experience kayak-wise.

Peterborough Musicfest

With almost 40 years of entertaining the community for free each summer since 1987, Peterborough Musicfest is Canada’s longest running free admission summer concert series.
Music fans, both locally and those who are visitors, are entertained over eight weeks of stellar Canadian talent twice a week. Past performers include Big Wreck, I Mother Earth, Metric, Sam Roberts, Kim Mitchell, Tom Cochrane and dozens more.
During my visit, Beau Dixon, Peterborough’s cheerleader and staunch supporter of the local arts scene, took the stage.
He delighted the engaged audience with strong vocals, a stellar stage presence and interacted with the audience. The toes were tapping, the dance moves were present and the musicians were on point.
Summer in Peterborough is great as it is; add in Musicfest which happens Wednesday and Saturday nights at Del Crary Park, and you’ll see why this is one of the city’s pillars.

Lock & Paddle

This annual event that’s six-years running is exciting for everyone.
Watch or be in one of the hundreds of kayaks and canoes to paddle into the Peterborough Lift Lock, enter one of the two tubs of the worlds largest hydraulic lift lock and be hoisted 65 feet above for an experience like nothing else.
This year saw roughly 400 participants with a variety of age groups actively involved and having a wonderful time with smiles, laughter and great moods throughout.
Doing has been on my bucket list since it launched and I can happily say that this item has been completed.

What some great restaurants in Peterborough & the Kawarthas?

Canoe & Paddle Pub

A short 20 minute drive northeast of Peterborough brings you to Lakefield, home to the appropriately named Canoe & Paddle Pub. 2024 marks 10 years in the community for them where they’re known for fantastic food, unmatched customer service and yes, they’ve got gluten-free options. They’ve also got nearly two dozen beers on tap!
They’ve got a special or activity happening every night, including wing night, live music, trivia and others.
Sports fans, rejoice! The patio features the same astroturf that the Toronto Blue Jays used to win their 1993 World Series championship!

La Hacienda

Downtown Peterborough is where you’ll go when the cravings for authentic Mexican food kick in. Specifically, at La Hacienda.
With nearly 25 years in business, their array of true Mexican cuisine and customer service add the the allure.
Portion sizes are generous, as are their complimentary chips and salsa appetizers.
There’s a gorgeous patio to enjoy or opt for indoor dining, plus several gluten-free and vegetarian options.

What are some of the best places to stay in Peterborough & the Kawarthas?

Burleigh Falls Inn

Half and hour northeast of the city is where Burleigh Falls Inn lays; a beautiful, boutique inn with rooms both inside and cottage-style buildings on-site.
There’s charm everywhere, from the tin-lined ceilings to the spectacular dining room, with a wrap around patio.  The Burleigh Falls room on the second floor (each room bears a unique name) is the best one to me as there’s a walk out patio/porch area that rewards you with a panoramic view of the lake and an elegant sunset view.
A spacious room, comfortable bed, good-sized bathroom and a prime location makes this 150+ year old venue the best place to stay.
Before you book your stay, keep in mind there are no elevators here; only stairs.
The menu offerings have enough variety without being overwhelming and the quality of the food is oh-so good.
I had two delectable dinners and a wholesome breakfast during my stay and enjoyed great customer service throughout my stay.
My two-night stay was perfect and earned them a repeat visit on my next Peterborough adventure.

Best Western Plus Otonabee Inn

Want to stay in Peterborough itself? The Best Western Plus is it. Close to Del Crary Park, Little Lake, restaurants and the Canadian Canoe Museum, you’ll enjoy comfy beds, a spacious room, several on-site amenities, a sweet Van Houtte high-end coffee machine and for the EV drivers, there are two EV charging stations.
