Modern Entrepreneur Profile - Mississauga's Kim Gillingham

In conversation with Mississauga entrepreneur, Kim Gillingham, owner of Drop Thought Kids.

1. What does your company provide/do?

Drop Thought Kids helps children ages 5-13 build confidence and critical thinking skills in today’s tech-driven world. We offer hands-on workshops focused on Science, STEM, and Art, and are launching Critical Thinking Conversation Cards to inspire meaningful, tech-free conversations at home or on the go.

2. What inspired you to start Drop Thought Kids?

After teaching science for 20+ years, I noticed kids becoming hesitant to think and share ideas. With pressure to be "right," over-reliance on technology, and less unstructured play, confidence was fading. When my daughter reached school age, I realized how important it was for her to trust her mind, respect diversity, and make informed decisions. I believe teaching critical thinking and building confidence is key to helping children thrive in a world influenced by AI.

3. What’s been the most impactful lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?

It’s okay not to have all the answers. Entrepreneurship is full of uncertainty and learning to embrace that has been crucial. It’s a journey of growth and discovery. While the challenges can be tough, having a strong support system of mentors and peers has been invaluable. I’ve learned to stay focused on my vision and trust that the answers will come as I continue moving forward.

4. How do you unwind?

I find peace in nature. Whether I’m walking in a local conservation area or spending time by the lake, being outdoors helps me clear my mind and recharge.

5. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Be clear and specific about your goals. Once you’ve defined them, go all in. If you don’t commit, you’ll always wonder, “What if?” Entrepreneurship requires trust in yourself and the process. Take the leap, and trust that you’ll learn and grow along the way.

6. What are your goals for 2025?

I love setting goals! As a family, we try something new each year. This year, we’re testing out new recipes as my daughter is excited to learn how to cook and I’m eager to explore new areas. As for Drop Thought Kids, 2025 is shaping up to be a big year! We’ll be launching two Critical Thinking Card decks to spark meaningful conversations. We’re also expanding our workshops and camps, both virtual and in-person, and we aim for our second Jada Mei Mathews book will go to print!

7. How did the Mississauga Starter Company Plus program help you start or expand your business?

The Mississauga Starter Company Plus program was a game-changer for me! It gave me the confidence and the knowledge I needed to truly go for it. The support I received from fellow entrepreneurs, leaders, guest speakers, and mentors was invaluable. It was amazing to be surrounded by people who supported my business and who were also pursuing their own entrepreneurial dreams. The program provided me with the tools, guidance, and focus I needed to move forward and turn my ideas into a reality. The education and connections I made were essential in helping Drop Thought Kids take off.
