A January 7th social media post from the Mississauga Library stated that “Starting January 13, only credit or debit payments are available at library locations. Cash payments will only be accepted at Hazel McCallion Central Library.”

What’s the reason behind the change to cashless payments with the exception of the Hazel McCallion Central Library?

The City of Mississauga shared this statement with Modern Mississauga Media:

With the elimination of daily fines, the number of cash transactions has been significantly reduced. Starting Monday, January 13, all Mississauga Library locations (except Hazel McCallion Central Library) will transition to credit and debit only for payments. Cash payments will continue to be accepted at Hazel McCallion Central Library. Alternate payment options are also available online at mississaugalibrary.ca
Staff will continue to work with customers who only have cash to find solutions.

Mississauga Library is also fine free. In order to provide barrier-free and equitable access to all of our customers, the library no longer charges daily overdue fines. Some fees, such as replacement fees for lost and damaged items, are still in effect. Some services, such as printing, have small fees to help recover costs for the service.
